Run-on sentence là câu chứa 2 mệnh đề độc lập trở lên, nhưng lại không có dấu câu hoặc thành phần kết nối phù hợp để ngăn cách chúng.
Đây là lỗi khá phổ biến trong Ielts Writing. Nó khá dễ nhận biết ở những câu ngắn như:My brother took the laptop he said it belonged to him.
Nhưng khó nhận biết hơn ở những câu dài hơn như:Lila enjoyed the bouquet of tulips John gave her on prom night however she prefers roses.
Và khó nhận biết hơn ở những câu dài lê thê.
🌺 5 cách khắc phục run-on sentence khi viết
1. Dùng dấu (,) đứng trước liên từ kết hợp (and, but, yet, so, or, nor, for) để nối 2 mệnh đề độc lập.
Run-on: My brother took the laptop he said it belonged to him.
✍️ Correction: My brother took the laptop, AND he said it belonged to him.
2. Đặt dấu (;) giữa hai mệnh đề.
Run-on: My brother took the laptop he said it belonged to him.

✍️ Correct: My brother took the laptop; he said it belonged to him.
3. Đặt dấu (;) đứng trước từ chuyển tiếp (transition word) giữa hai mệnh đề:
Run-on: Lila enjoyed the bouquet of tulips John gave her on prom night however she prefers roses.
✍️ Correction: Lila enjoyed the bouquet of tulips John gave her on prom night; however, she prefers roses
4. Chia các mệnh đề độc lập thành các câu riêng biệt.
Run-on: It seemed to Wanda that her daughter had more than enough crayons, they were strewn across the bedroom floor and some of them were broken, and, worse still, someone had used the stub of a red crayon to mark a sinister smiley face on the wall.
✍️ Correction: It seemed to Wanda that her daughter had more than enough crayons. They were strewn across the bedroom floor, and some of them were broken. Worse still, someone had used the stub of a red crayon to mark a sinister smiley face on the wall.
5. Cấu trúc lại câu bằng cách biến 1 mệnh đề độc lập thành phụ thuộc.
Trong các ví dụ bên dưới, mệnh đề chuyển thành phụ thuộc được in nghiêng.

Run-on: I told the children I would read to them they said they wanted to sit by me so they could look at the pictures. ✍️ Correction: When I told the children I would read to them, they said they wanted to sit by me so they could look at the pictures.
